Clean and Sanitize Your Equipment

We can not stress enough the importance of cleaning and sanitizing EVERYTHING that touches your wine! This is important for the health and resulting quality of your wine. The alcohol in the wine will kill any bacteria that could be harmful to you, but if you don't properly clean AND sanitize, your wine could pick up unwanted bacteria which could destroy your wine.

Now it's time to get your home beer making equipment ready. We suggest you read through these instructions first, before you actually perform the steps below.

Cleaning and Sanitizing

  • Wash your brew pot and wort chiller (if using one) and rinse well with clear water. No need to sanitize the brew pot/chiller since the boiling of your wort will kill any bacteria.
  • Wash the primary fermenter and rinse it well with clear water.
  • Place some of the sanitizer solution (mixed according to the instructions on label) into the fermenter and swish it around. Be sure to sanitize the entire interior of the plastic bucket including the underside of the lid.
  • While you're at it, now is a good time to sanitize your hydrometer, siphon/tubing and airlock as well.
  • Discard the sanitizing solution.
  • Rinse everything you sanitized with clear water according the instructions of the sanitizer you are using. (Different brands require varying levels of rinsing from no rinsing to rinsing 3 times.)

Hint: Sanitize your sink also as you empty the bucket. Later, if you find you need a "safe place" to lay your spoon or paddle down, you can use the sink as a sterile landing place.

Now that our equipment is prepared, cleaned and sanitized, we'll show you in step 3 how to actually brew beer!
